NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING (NLP)

It may sound complex but the meaning and treatment methods are really very logical, easy to understand and easy to implement. Let’s break it down:

  • Neuro stands for the Brain (including the mind).  This is essentially the “control centre” of the body passing millions of messages through our neural connections every minute of every day.  The signals we ignite are often determined by the language we use.

  • Linguistic is the language we use internally and externally to make sense of our world.

  • Programming basically means the brain is like a very sophisticated computer that develops programmes and patterns of behaviour based on our experiences and the meaning and interpretations we place on those experiences.  Some of these are very helpful and some may not be so helpful.

So the neurological system regulates how our bodies function, language determines how we communicate with other people and ourselves and our programming determines our understanding of the world.

Using an NLP approach to your treatment can address the many levels involved in understanding being human. NLP is a process that involves the development of behavioural competence and flexibility, but also involves strategic thinking and an understanding of the mental and cognitive processes behind behaviour. NLP provides tools and skills for the development of states of individual excellence, but it also establishes a system of empowering beliefs and presuppositions about what human beings are, what communication is and what the process of change is all about. At another level, NLP is about self-discovery, exploring identity and what we want (as opposed to what we don’t want!). NLP is not only about developing competence and excellence, it is about learning new insight, wisdom and vision.
